Steven M. Crimando, MA, is an emergency and disaster behavioral health clinician with four decades of frontline experience. He completed his undergraduate degrees in human developmental and public communications at Syracuse University, and his master’s in clinical psychology at Fairleigh Dickinson University. He is an alumnus of the Harvard Medical School Global Trauma program and worked in the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey’s (UMDNJ) Behavioral Research & Training Institute (BTATI) until 9/11 when transitioned to his role as the Director of Training for the Disaster & Terrorism Branch for the New Jersey Division of Mental Health & Addiction Services.
Steve is a Certified Threat Manager (CTM) with the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP), a Certified Master Instructor with U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s National Threat Evaluation and Reporting (NTER) program, and a certified Disaster Response Crisis Counselor (DRCC). He served as a Field Operations Supervisor for FEMA’s mental health response to the 9/11 attacks in New York City, coordinated psychological operations at New Jersey’s Anthrax Screening Center, assisted at major incidents including the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, a Unabomber strike, several hurricanes, and multiple air crashes, and has assisted many individuals, communities and organizations following incidents of mass violence and terrorism.
Steve is consultant and instructor for many law enforcement and intelligence agencies such as U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the U.S Department of Justice, and the Department of State, as well as the United Nations. He is an advisor and instructor for the FBI Community Anti-Threats Officer (CATO) program and is a cleared partner to the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF). He also serves as a subject matter expert and instructor for the Institute for Intergovernmental Research (IRR) State & Local Anti-Terrorism (SLATT) program. Steve is the chair of the ASIS International Extremism & Political Instability Community (EPIC) Steering Committee and a member of the Steering Committee for the ASIS Human Threat Management Community. He has authored many publications, and is frequently featured as an expert on crisis prevention and response in the media and courts.
