Workplace Violence Prevention

Source | MN BCA
Workplace violence is a form of predatory, targeted violence. Perpetrators don't simply "snap." Instead they typically progress along a recognized pathway often ending with a violent attack.
Research from the FBI and Secret Service has determined that perpetrators usually exhibit four to five warning behaviors observable by others before an attack. In many instances, violence is predictable, and preventable.
Implementing threat intelligence, targeted violence prevention measures, and enhanced personal and family security can help mitigate this risk.
Workplace violence represents a growing concern that requires employers’ careful attention and proactive management. Data shows that the prevalence of workplace violence appears to be increasing [1]. Rising rates of workplace violence has made many employees concerned for their safety, as news of shootings and assaults increases anxiety across industries.
Concerns about workplace violence can result in significant implications, including adverse effects on mental health, decreased productivity, increased absenteeism, and elevated employee turnover. When individuals perceive their environment as unsafe, it becomes challenging to maintain focus, engagement, and optimal performance.
Workplace violence is rising, and many employees lack the skills to address it. These events can increase anxiety, impact mental health, and disrupt work. States such as California and New York, now require employers to implement violence prevention plans, provide annual training, and document incidents.

With workplace violence increasing, all organizations are responsible for prevention. Insufficient training, ambiguous procedures, and a negative workplace culture may pose risks to employees comparable to physical hazards.

Tailored Solutions
Every organization has a unique violence risk profile. Generic, one-size-fits-all approaches to workplace violence prevention, response, and recovery rarely meet the mark. Instead, they fall short and leave organizations with critical areas of vulnerability.

True prevention requires more than policies on paper. It demands a deep understanding of human behavior, proven threat assessment practices, and strategies that reduce risk while fostering a culture of safety.
